A woman has the greatest chance of conceiving during the 2-3 fertile days within menstrual each cycle. These days occur around ovulation - the release of a single, mature egg from an ovary.
Once the egg is released, it travels down the fallopian tube where it may be fertilised by sperm within twenty-four hours of release.
If you count the first day of your last period as being the first day of the cycle, ovulation typically happens around the fourteenth day. It is triggered by sudden surge in the level of Leutenizing Hormone (LH). Although it is always present in the body in smaller amounts the pituitary gland releases more LH just prior to ovulation. The surge can last from 1-3 days, and starts between one and two days before ovulation.
