When it comes to looking after their health, many woman have some advantages over men. They are likely to be better informed about their own bodies and at noticing changes in their physical well-being that may indicate a need for testing, advice or treatment.

Despite the pressures that many women face in juggling the responsibilities of being a wife, a mother, a working professional, and of running the family home, they are also considerably more likely to visit their doctors.

Yet being a woman also brings vulnerability to specific diseases, such as breast, ovarian and cervical cancer, while also increasing the risk of other diseases. Women are, for example, four times more likely to develop osteoporosis (especially after the menopause), and are more vulnerable to anaemia and heart disease, which is also more likely to be fatal in women.

Helping Women to Stay Healthy
Women are more likely than men to be interested in ensuring they adopt a healthy lifestyle, moderating alcohol, avoiding smoking, eating a balanced diet, and taking some form of regular exercise. Increasing numbers of women are also taking an annual health check or visiting well-woman clinics (often run at local health centres) for checks such as breast screening or smear tests.
